McKeeg: a Sept of Clan Macleod on Uist and Jura
1469
Uisdean or "Hugh" MacDonald, born illigitimately receives the title of Chief of MacDonald of Sleat from his brother John MacDonald of Ross. He is succeeded by his son John MacDonald (2 of Sleat) and his second son Donald Gallach MacDonald (3 of Sleat)
1500
Donald "Grumach" MacDonald (4 of Sleat) is born. He marries Catherine MacDonald of Clan Ranald and then Margaret Macleod, daughter of Roderick Macleod.
1520s
Donald "Gorm" MacDonald (5 of Sleat) is born. He marries his cousin Mary Macleod, daughter of Roderick Macleod II.
1539
Donald dies while laying siege to Eilean Donan Castle which was owned by Clan Mathieson.
1550
Donald "Gormeson" MacDonald (6 of Sleat) is born.
1567
Aodh MacAodhagain, known as Hew M'Kegaine arrives in the Hebrides (Coll) from Ireland where he leases the island from the MacDonalds of Sleat. The MacDonalds value their new Irish friends as makers of the finest swords.
Around this time Donald "Gormeson" MacDonald marries a "Mary Maclean" whose father is "Eachain". Could Eachain's true identity be a "MacEachain" or "M'Kegaine"?
1580
Donald "Gorm Mor" MacDonald (7 of Sleat) is born.
1586
The MacDonalds of Sleat fight the Macleans
1600
A contingent of MacAodhagains arrive on North Uist where they are accepted by the Clan MacDonald of Sleat.
The same year a group of McEachains (thought to be of the same clan) return to Ireland where they become Caghans. The McEachains are led by Archibald McEachain. Could this be the same person as Archibald MacDonald (brother of Donald 'Gorm Mor" MacDonald) whose mother was possibly a McEachain?
1601
Donald "Gorm Mor" MacDonald leads the clan against Rory Macleod and they do battle on Jura, but there is later peace and Donald marries Margaret Macleod, daughter of Norman Macleod.
1616
Donald "Gorm Mor" MacDonald dies without issue.
The Clan MacDonald counts the Clan McKeighan (and its modern equivalent Keegan) of North Uist as a Sept
The Clan MacDonald counts the Clan McEachain as a Sept
The Clan Macleod counts the Clan McKeeg as a sept
Proposed lineage:
Hew M'Kegaine of Coll (identical with McEachain Mor, also Hector Maclean)
- Born circa 1530.
- Possible son of Flann MacAodhagain or a contemporary
Mary McKeighan
- Born circa 1560
- Marries Donald "Gormeson" MacDonald (son of Donald MacDonald and Mary Macleod)
- Making McKeighan a sept of MacDonald
Archibald "McKeighan" MacDonald
- Born circa 1580
- Returns to Ireland
Sons of Archibald McKeighan include:
- Daniel MacCaghan (possibly father of Daniel Keigeen resident in Isle of Man in 1697)
- Ogan MacCaghan (could this be the Egan McKeigan who Scottish folklore remembers as a seal hunter?)
- Donald MacCaghan (named after his uncle Donald "Gorm Mor" MacDonald?)
