Whitechapel Keegans
Kathleen Hay from Washington State has contacted us about a branch of the Keegans who moved from Ireland to England pre-1823.
The family
Daniel Keegan, a cooper (barrel-maker) was born in Ireland around 1755 - 1770.
Daniel had two sons born in Ireland: Daniel Keegan (b.1791) and Jeremiah Keegan (b.c.1800). Both sons were living in Whitechapel, Middlesex, England in 1841.
Jeremiah married Caroline Scannell.
Daniel's wife was Mary (b.c. 1801 Ire); 6 known children: William (b.c. 1823 England), Daniel, Catherine, Elizabeth (married Pitt), Michael, and Annie Keegan (married Brown) (1844-1891).
Who was Daniel Keegan?
Kathleen says the only possible so far is a Daniel Keegan who died in1865 in Cullingar, Westmeath - at the age of 109
The branch today
Daniel's granddaughter, Annie Keegan (1844-1891) married John Brown, an Irish mariner, in Gravesend: 6 children. Thomas, Kathleen's grandfather, married an English girl whose father insisted on moving his entire family to Canada in 1909. Kathleen's branch moved to the US.
Picture: Probably taken about 1879. Thomas Michael Brown 6, Anne Brown 10 mos, Mother Annie Keegan Brown and Bill 8 . The oldest, Jack, age 13, was already an apprentice seaman, at sea with his father, John Brown. If the photo were taken in 1877, the baby would be the sadly short-lived Elizabeth Ann Brown
